Why the “Ted Lasso” Christmas-in-August Episode is Exactly What We Needed

(Spoiler alert — I’ll be discussing the third episode of the new “Ted Lasso” season below.)

My wife and I watched the third episode of the new season of “Ted Lasso” last week. Based on the comments I’ve read online, we weren’t the only viewers surprised to find ourselves watching a Christmas-themed show in the middle of August.

When the mercury is bursting out of the top of the thermometer, it’s hard to muster much enthusiasm for Christmas carols and fruit cake. But it wasn’t just the timing of the episode that threw me off. What confused me more was that the show had almost no storyline.

The only “tension” came from Ted’s brief bout with holiday depression (before Rebecca rushed in to save the day) and the mysterious origin of a little girl’s halitosis. I kept waiting for a twist or a “gotcha” moment — but none came. It was simply a show in which good people enjoyed being together and celebrating a festive occasion.

Sounds more like watching an old home movie than a hit TV show, right? Yet, when the episode ended, I found myself blinking back tears — and it caught me completely off guard. Because it wasn’t until the end that you fully…
